The Tantramar Council has voted to introduce an EV charging tax to ensure what they call ‘road fairness.” Drivers who use gas-powered vehicles pay a fuel tax which helps pay for road maintenance but the wealthy EV drivers evade this tax because their car uses electricity instead of gas.

“Because EV drivers don’t pay the fuel tax, we needed a way to ensure that all citizens pay their fair share.”, says Mayor Andrew Black.

Some residents who don’t pay the tax even felt excluded. “Since we’re all about inclusivity I think we should all be included in the tax.”, said EV driver Sabine Dietz. “Since most residents can’t afford an EV or the renovations required to install a Level 2 home charger this is a great way to ensure equity between them and the wealthier people who can afford EVs.”
